Common Power Chair Problems We Fix

  • Batteries that will not hold a charge. Power chair batteries wear out over time. Shorter range or a chair that slows down on inclines are common signs.
  • Chair will not turn on or move. This can be a battery, charger, fuse, wiring or controller issue, or the chair may be in freewheel mode.
  • Joystick and controller faults. Error codes, jerky driving or a chair that pulls to one side often point to the joystick, controller or motors.
  • Worn tires and casters. Flat or worn tires and wobbly casters affect steering and safety.
  • Seating problems. Torn upholstery, broken armrests, worn cushions, and power tilt or recline that stops working.

For quick checks you can do before you call, see our post on troubleshooting common power wheelchair issues.

Manual Wheelchair Repairs

Manual wheelchairs need attention too. We replace tires, tubes and casters, adjust or replace brakes, fix footrests and armrests, and replace worn seat and back upholstery. We also fit wheelchair cushions for comfort and pressure relief. If a chair is beyond repair, we can help you compare it with a lightweight wheelchair or a custom manual wheelchair.

What to Have Ready When You Call

  • The make and model of the chair (usually on a label under the seat or on the frame)
  • What happened and when it started
  • Any error code or flashing lights on the joystick
  • Where the chair is located, and whether the user depends on it every day
  • Insurance information, if you want us to check whether the repair may be covered

Photos or a short video of the problem sent by text often help us figure out the likely cause and the parts needed before the appointment.

Insurance and Repairs

Some repairs on insurance-provided power wheelchairs may be covered, depending on your plan and the chair's history. Coverage rules vary, so we check before work begins and let you know what to expect. You can learn more on our Medicare, Medicaid and insurance page.

Repair or Replace?

Not every chair is worth fixing. A repair usually makes sense when the frame is sound and the problem is a wear part such as batteries, tires, casters, brakes or upholstery. Replacement may be the better choice when the frame is cracked or bent, parts are no longer made for an older model, or the user's needs have changed, for example when they now need tilt, recline or a different seat size.

We will give you an honest assessment and a clear estimate before any work is done, so you can decide what is right for you and your budget. If replacement makes more sense, we can walk you through new chair options, including travel power chairs and insurance options for qualifying power wheelchairs.

Keep Your Chair Running Longer

  • Charge power chair batteries as recommended by the manufacturer, and do not let them run completely down.
  • Check tire pressure and look for worn treads regularly.
  • Keep the joystick and wiring dry, which matters here in Florida's rain and humidity.
  • Wipe down the frame and upholstery and keep moving parts free of sand and debris.
  • Schedule a check-up when something feels different, before it becomes a breakdown.
