Power Chair Battery Not Holding a Charge? What to Check Before You Call
Posted by Michael Russo, BS, RRT, CEAC, ATP - Home Medical Equipment Expert on
If your power chair battery isn't holding a charge, start with the simple things: make sure the charger is plugged in and its light is on, check that the cables and connectors are seated and undamaged, and let the chair charge fully overnight. If the range keeps getting shorter even after a full charge, the batteries may be wearing out and it's time to have a technician take a look. Call Medical Equipment Specialists at (772) 277-7746 for repair.

Quick Checks: Power Chair Battery Not Holding a Charge
Always follow your chair's manual. Don't open the battery box or handle the batteries yourself.
- Charger and outlet: Make sure the charger is plugged into a working outlet and firmly connected to the chair. Try a different outlet. Look at the charger lights; your manual explains what they mean.
- Cables and connections: Look at the charger cord, the charging port and the joystick cable for cracks, bent pins or loose plugs. Don't force anything.
- Charge fully overnight: Let the charger finish its cycle. Unplugging early can leave you with less range. Try not to run the batteries completely flat.
- Battery gauge: After a full charge, note the reading on the joystick gauge. Does it drop quickly or suddenly as you drive?
- Range over time: Compare how far the chair goes now with a few weeks ago. A slow drop points to wear. A sudden drop points to a problem for a technician.
- Heat, cold and storage: Very hot or cold spots and long periods of storage can affect how batteries perform.

Charger, Connections or Batteries? What You Might Be Seeing
- The charger light never comes on: Check the outlet and the plugs first. If there's still no light, the charger or the charging port may need service.
- It charges, but the range is short: If the chair charges and the gauge reads full but you can't go as far, the batteries may be worn.
- Range falls a little at a time: Batteries wear out over time, so a slow drop over weeks is common as they age.

When to Call a Technician

Frequently Asked Questions
Why won't my power wheelchair battery hold a charge?
Common reasons are a loose or damaged connection, a charger that isn't finishing its cycle, or batteries that are wearing out. Check the outlet, charger and cables, charge fully overnight, then see how far the chair goes. If it still runs short, call a technician.
How long should I charge my power chair?
Follow your chair's manual. As a general rule, plug in at the end of the day and let the charger finish its cycle instead of unplugging early.
Can I replace my power chair batteries myself?
We recommend having a technician do it. Follow your chair's manual, and don't open the battery box or handle the batteries yourself. If a battery looks damaged, swollen or leaking, stop using the chair and call us.
Why is my power chair range shorter than it used to be?
A slow drop over weeks can mean the batteries are wearing out, since batteries wear out over time. Incomplete charging, poor connections and very hot or cold weather can also play a part. A technician can check which one it is.
What do the charger lights mean?
Lights vary by charger and chair, so check your manual. If the lights show a fault, or no light comes on at all, call us.
