Hospital Bed Rental with Medicare in Stuart & the Treasure Coast

Posted by Michael Russo, BS, RRT, CEAC, ATP - Home Medical Equipment Expert on

When a doctor says a loved one needs a hospital bed at home, the next questions come fast. Will Medicare help pay for it? Should we rent or buy? How quickly can it be delivered in Stuart or Port St. Lucie? This guide walks through how hospital bed rental with Medicare works at Medical Equipment Specialists, so you know what to expect before you call.

Does Medicare Cover a Hospital Bed at Home?

Medicare Part B treats a home hospital bed as durable medical equipment (DME). Coverage depends on your doctor documenting that the bed is medically necessary, for example because you need your upper body raised, need frequent repositioning, or cannot safely use a regular bed. A standard bed that is simply more comfortable is not enough on its own.

In practice, that means you will need:

  • A written order from your doctor or other treating practitioner for the hospital bed
  • Medical records that explain why a hospital bed is needed
  • Your Medicare information so the claim can be submitted

If you are leaving the hospital or a rehab facility, the discharge planner or case manager can often help gather the order and notes. Discharge planners are welcome to call us directly.

What "Non-Assigned" Means for You

Medical Equipment Specialists supplies hospital beds to Medicare patients on a non-assigned basis. That means we do not accept Medicare's approved amount as payment in full. The claim is still submitted to Medicare, but Medicare sends its payment to you rather than to us, and you pay us directly for the rental.

Because of this, your out-of-pocket cost can be different from what you would pay an assigned supplier. We will go over the rental price with you before delivery so there are no surprises. If you have a Medicare supplement or secondary plan, ask that plan how it handles non-assigned DME claims.

Renting vs. Buying a Hospital Bed

Many families choose to rent because the need is temporary, such as recovery after surgery or a hospital stay. Renting also means the bed is delivered, set up and serviced by us. Others prefer to buy, especially when the need is long term or when they want a specific bed that Medicare would not cover.

  • Rent if you expect to need the bed for weeks or months, or you are not sure how long.
  • Buy if the need is long term, or you want features beyond a standard full-electric bed.

Both options are available for our full-electric home hospital beds. You can also add a pressure-relief mattress or a trapeze bar if your care plan calls for one.

Long-Term Care Beds Are Sale Only

Our long-term care bed is a heavier-duty, expandable hi-lo bed built for extended use and higher weight capacities. It is available for purchase only and is not part of our rental program. If you are unsure whether a standard full-electric bed or a long-term care bed fits your situation, call us and we will talk it through.

Delivery and Setup Across the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach

We are based in Stuart and deliver hospital beds throughout Martin, St. Lucie and Palm Beach counties, including Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, Palm City, Hobe Sound, Jupiter and the Palm Beaches. Our team sets up the bed, checks that the controls work, and shows the patient and caregivers how to raise, lower and lock it safely.

Before delivery, it helps to:

  • Choose a room with space on both sides of the bed for caregivers
  • Clear a path from the door to that room
  • Have a grounded outlet nearby for the bed (and the mattress pump, if you add one)

How to Get Started

The fastest way to start is to call or text us with the patient's name, the delivery address and the doctor's information. We will tell you what paperwork is needed and confirm pricing and timing. You can also read more about Medicare, Medicaid and insurance on our site.

Call or Text (772) 277-7746 or send us a request through our contact page. We have served the Treasure Coast since 2009 and are happy to help families and discharge planners get a bed in place.
