Power Chair Joystick Error or Blinking Lights? What to Check and When to Call
Posted by Michael Russo, BS, RRT, CEAC, ATP - Home Medical Equipment Expert on
Flashing lights on your power chair joystick? Here's what to check first, and when it's time to call. Start with a power cycle, make sure both freewheel levers are in drive, and unplug the charger. Flash-code meanings differ by chair, so check your owner's manual rather than guessing from a general chart. If the error keeps coming back, call Medical Equipment Specialists at (772) 277-7746 for repair.

Quick Checks: Power Chair Joystick Error or Blinking Lights
Always follow your chair's manual. These first checks are simple and safe for most chairs.
- Turn the chair off and back on: Power the joystick fully off, wait a few seconds, then turn it back on. A one-time reset clears many temporary errors.
- Both freewheel levers in drive: Check that both motor release (freewheel) levers are set to drive, not neutral/push. If either lever is in freewheel, the chair may show an error and refuse to drive.
- Charger unplugged: Unplug the charger from the chair and the wall. Many chairs will not drive, or will flash a fault, while still on charge.
If the lights or message clear after those three steps, you're ready to go. If they come back right away, note what you see (without guessing a code) and call a technician.

Blinking Lights and Joystick Errors: What You Might Be Seeing
- Lights flash after a bump or restart: A power cycle often clears a temporary glitch. If it only happened once, keep an eye on it.
- Error returns after freewheel or charging: A lever left in push mode or a charger still plugged in is a common reason the joystick complains. Fix those first.
- A repeating flash pattern or on-screen code: Patterns differ by brand and model. Check your owner's manual for what your chair's lights mean. Do not treat a general flash-code chart as definitive for your chair.

When to Call a Technician
Stop using the chair and call us right away if you notice a burning smell, smoke, heat from the joystick or controller, damaged wiring, or bent or broken pins on the joystick plug.
Also call us if:
- The same blinking pattern or joystick error keeps coming back after a power cycle.
- Both freewheel levers are in drive and the charger is unplugged, but the error remains.
- The chair won't drive, cuts out, or the joystick feels loose, sticky or unresponsive.
- You see cracked joystick cables, loose plugs or water damage around the controller.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why is my power chair joystick blinking or showing an error?
Blinking lights or an error on the joystick can mean the chair needs a simple reset, a freewheel lever is still in push mode, the charger is still plugged in, or something else the controller is reporting. Flash patterns differ by chair, so check your owner's manual for what your lights mean. If the error comes back after the basic checks, call a technician.
What should I check first when my power wheelchair joystick flashes?
Start with three things: turn the chair fully off and back on, make sure both freewheel (motor release) levers are in drive, and unplug the charger. Always follow your chair's manual. If the lights or error keep coming back, call us.
What do the flashing lights on my power chair mean?
Flash codes and bar counts differ by brand and model. Do not treat a general chart as definitive for your chair. Look up the pattern in your owner's manual, or note what you see and call a technician.
Can I keep resetting a joystick error myself?
A one-time power cycle is a common first check. If the same error or blinking pattern keeps returning, stop resetting and call a technician so the underlying issue can be looked at.
Do you repair power chair joysticks you didn't sell?
Yes. We repair most brands, including Permobil, Sunrise Medical, Pride, Invacare, TiLite and more. Choose a Mobility House Call or drop off your chair at our Stuart office.
