Delivering the Right Fit: What to Expect When Your Chair Arrives - Part 6
Posted by Michael Russo, BS, RRT, CEAC, ATP - Home Medical Equipment Expert on
Getting a custom power wheelchair is a big step—and once it’s approved and delivered, the goal is to make sure it’s a perfect fit for your loved one’s needs, comfort, and safety.
Here’s what to expect on delivery day and in the days that follow.
1. Home Delivery and Setup
A certified technician or seating specialist will deliver the chair to your home. They’ll bring all the parts—cushion, backrest, headrest, joystick, and more—and assemble it right there with you.
2. Final Fitting and Adjustments
The ATP or seating team will check:
- Posture and alignment in the chair
- Height and angle of footrests, back, and head support
- Correct operation of tilt, recline, and drive controls
- Seating pressure and comfort
Minor changes are made on the spot. If larger adjustments are needed, they’ll schedule a follow-up service visit.
3. Caregiver and Patient Training
You’ll receive hands-on training on:
- How to safely operate the power chair
- How to tilt and recline for pressure relief
- How to charge and maintain the batteries
- Basic troubleshooting and who to call for help
We also go over important reminders like repositioning schedules, pressure relief techniques, and cleaning tips.
4. Follow-Up and Support
Within a few weeks, you may receive a follow-up call or home visit to make sure everything is going smoothly. If the patient’s condition changes, additional seating adjustments may be needed.
Questions to Ask on Delivery Day
- How often should we tilt or recline for skin protection?
- Who do I call for repairs or service?
- Can we get help if my loved one’s needs change?
